Common Questions about Vaporooter
It's a special foam containing a root growth inhibitor which is pumped into your drains/sewer that causes those roots to shrivel up and float out of the pipe.
Yes, Vaporooter contains a root growth inhibitor that will destroy all roots it comes in contact with.
Yes, Vaporooter completely stops roots growing back for around 12 months. Annual applications are recommended to permanently prevent roots entering the pipe.
Vaporooter has a root growth inhibitor Dichlobenil 50W that attaches to organic material and sterilises the soil where the roots enter the pipe.
No. Vaporooter is a non systemic herbicide, meaning it will only affect the root material it comes in contact with and only travel a very short distance up the root.
Yes, Vaporooter is safe to use as the main ingredients of Vaporooter are commonly used on food crops to control weed growth.
Roots typically enter the pipe at the sides and top of the sewer pipe. The foam is used to carry the ingredients of Vaporooter to the roots at the top of the pipe where the roots enter. The foam also controls how long Vaporooter is in contact with the root mass.
There is no control over how long the chemical is in contact with the roots if it is poured into the toilet like some caustic and copper sulphate products, which will make this method ineffective.
No. Vaporooter is applied with a Mini Foamer machine by a licensed applicator. The machine generates the foam and pumps it into the sewer. The applicator is trained to ensure the pipes are completely filled with the foam to ensure good contact with the roots.
Yes, the foam holds the Vaporooter in place and the waste water flows under the foam.
The application process takes less than one hour but depends largely on the length of the pipes.
Vaporooter begins destroying the roots immediately. The roots in the pipe, in the pipe wall and just outside the pipe die, rot and drop off into the flow. This allows ground pressure to assist closing the cracks and gaps in the pipe caused by the root growth.
When roots are cut out with the hydrojet to clear a blockage, the roots respond very quickly by “bleeding” a sap that assists healing and regrowth. This retards the intake of any chemical for a period of days.
When the “bleeding” stops, nutrients start travelling up the root system, promoting growth. After 6 to 8 weeks fine white root stems have formed that absorb the Vaporooter root growth inhibitor very efficiently maximising the effectiveness of the Vaporooter process.
Once trees have entered your sewer line you unfortunately have an ongoing problem. Usually sewer blockages occur when the plumbing system is being heavily used. When there are a lot of people at home like school holidays, Christmas and Grand Final day. This will result in inconvenience and a costly call out fee to a plumber.
Yes, Vaporooter will destroy the roots in the pipe and in the pipe wall. The roots will not grow back through the cracks and defects in the pipe. This will allow ground pressure to assist in closing the cracks and maintaining the condition of your sewer pipes.

Honest and reliable service. Another plumber had quoted 10k for digging up and replacing pipes. Dr Drains came and reviewed the pipes and recommended a root treatment option that was much more affordable. Really appreciate the service!
Prior to undertaking work, Dr Drains explained with respect the issues and the variables in play; they didn't patronize or try to steam roll me; both Josh and Jeremy invested the time to allay my significant concerns on the situation; they minimized disruption to the dig site and damage to my yard when needing to get access to move digger through it / vegetation to access site. DD quoted at a competitive rate, and honoured that rate even after the job ended up being more complex than first appreciated. Followed up with job satisfaction, and informed me how to make a claim for reimbursement against Icon Water/ were supportive in ensuring they'd provide all necessary info for me to do so (including contacting Icon on multiple occasion to attend the site, when the issue was clearly on Icon's part of the sewerage line). Hope I'll never have to use them again; wouldn't hesitate to contact them if I do.
Dr Drains were great in isolating and fixing a blocked storm water pipe at my house. They also assisted providing information that resulted in the entire storm water line being cleared by council. They also followed up with me regularly to ensure that the blockage and additional works were complete. I would recommend their services without reservation.
